My Students

Tucked away between public housing, private homes, a high school, and the subway sits a wonderful Title I school. The children in my class come from very diverse socioeconomic households which include everything from "traditional" family units to foster family homes to those who struggle with homelessness. We are a very diverse school with many different backgrounds in one. Many students come in not speaking any English and some parents require translators to communicate.

"All kids need is a little help, a little hope and someone who believes in them." Magic Johnson.

As for my children, some have disabilities varying from physical and cognitive delays to children who receive an array of services. From the moment they walk into the classroom, it is transformed. They enter eager, full with the desire to learn the answers to a million burning questions and have so many things to share. It is then that our classroom transforms into a curious, exciting, and warm place to be!

My Project

It is true what they say- kids say the darnest things. However when you hear a child say, "My nose is cold, and my tail is cold too." You want to laugh.... you may even be smiling now, but then you stop and think. In a single moment you realize that this five year old is already feeling cold and has not yet worn a warm winter coat to school or perhaps last years coat that is too tight. You begin to wonder! The weather here in the North East is only going to get worse and these little ones need to be kept warm and healthy. All too quickly I knew what I had to do. Each year I surprise my class with a holiday gift. Even if they do not celebrate a specific holiday because all children love receiving gifts and the smile upon their faces, the wonder and the eagerness to open and find out what is inside- it brings joy and warm to my heart. The hat, gloves and socks will make for the perfect gift for this holiday season as it will help keep the children of OUR future happy and healthy.

Adding a little holiday cheer and keeping my children safe and healthy is all that I want to do.

I am certain that the children will appreciate their gift. I know I can not heal the world but I can certainly try to make it a better place for my children. Please consider helping spread some holiday cheer and put a smile on the faces of my children. No one can heal the world, but we can all try to make it a better place one child at a time!
