Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are incredible. I have 24 motivated English Language Learners who are eager to learn. My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds with limited resources available to them. We are a Title I Performance Improvement school with a 100% free lunch program. Many parents work two jobs and are struggling to support their families.
Though their environment may not be conducive to learning, my students have an insatiable love of learning.
I know that if we provide them with the right support, resources, and opportunities, they can experience success.
My Project
It’s cold everywhere and thankfully it’s just rain here in Southern California. My students still are catching colds, coming to school sick, and are spreading germs everywhere. These sanitizing wipes and disinfecting sprays are so important during this time of year. This is a safe barrier to make sure the flu stays out of our classroom. We will wipe down our tables every day and use the paper towels after every hand wash. Our school no longer supplies classrooms with paper towels so students are wiping their hands on their pants. I also want to provide every student with chapstick because their lips are always dry and sometimes cracked. To soothe their throat, I will give those students who have a cough or sore throat a cough lozenge and Kleenex for those sneezes that come with a cold.
That nasty flu is trying to come in our class but with your help, it will stay out.
The lotion is also important because many students come to school with very dry skin. The cold air chaps their skin and lips so their face looks like someone got red paint and made circles around their cheeks. They lick their lips so much that it starts to crack and get very red. The lotion and chapstick can be a luxury to some families so I want to provide them with these basic essentials. I can’t control the weather nor their home life but I can make them feel comfortable and loved even for part of their day.
