My Students

I teach kindergarten at a school in San Francisco's Chinatown. My students are all English language learners. They are either new immigrants or have lived in this community all their lives. Most are from low-income families struggling to pay for basic necessities. Many of my students come to school wearing shoes and clothes that do not fit. 100% of them qualify for the free breakfast, lunch, and after-school supper program.

Their sense of normalcy is going back to their Single Room Occupancy (SRO), where many families share a community bathroom and kitchen.

Their home is typically a 12 ft x 12 ft room that the whole family lives in, with little or no space to call their own.

In addition, with the rent rising in San Francisco, this has been an added burden on the families.

My Project

Many of my low-income students come to school wearing hand-me-downs that no longer fit them. Their jackets are worn out and some have holes in them. Due to the cold winter days, students have been asking me if they can stay indoors during their recess times because it is too cold for them to play outside.

With their new jackets, my students will be warm and ready for winter.

Studies show that students benefit from regular recess breaks during the school day. Since exercise helps students learn better in school, giving students every opportunity to go outside to play will benefit them. They will be able to enjoy recess with other students and return to the classroom feeling recharged.
