My students need blankets to stay warm in class during our frigid winter months. They need mittens to protect their small hands from frost bite and I need yarn to crochet each of them a scarf.

Each morning my first graders come to school eager to learn, despite living in one of the lowest income neighborhoods in America. Our students have a higher rate of childhood poverty than 96.5% of U.S. neighborhoods, and face many challenges in their daily lives. They lack many tangible items, but they have minds full of curiosity and a desire to achieve. Our school serves 800 PreK-8th grade students, located in an inner city in Michigan, where economic times have been tough for decades. Our parents are dedicated to their children's education even though resources are scarce.
My six-year-old first graders truly "believe they can fly" and "reach the sky." As the boys and girls rush in to greet me each morning with toothless smiles, they know they are in "the happy class" where they will work harder than they ever imagined and "grow their brains bigger and stronger," so they can soar and reach the sky.
My classroom is located in an inner city in Michigan. Today it was 13 degrees outside while the children walked to school. Most of the children walk to school each day, since many families do not have reliable transportation.
It has been a frigid winter so far, with many days below twenty degrees, the children need mittens and yarn for scarves to stay warm.
Our classroom windows face the snow covered play area. The wind blows in and the children are often shivering in class. This project will provide blankets to help them stay warm and mittens to protect their fingers from frost bite. I have been trying to crochet warm scarves for each child to protect their face and necks from the frigid temperatures. As I drive to school each morning, I see the children out walking to school with the brightly colored scarves wrapped around their faces to stay warm. I need more yarn, so I can crochet a warm scarf for each child. Your generous donation will help warm up a cold child.
