My Students
My class consists of thirty-eight males and fifty-six females. Ninety-two percent of the students in my class are part of the free or reduce-priced priced lunch program. Most students come from a blue collar working family. We are in a high poverty location.
My class is an essential way for them to be exposed to an engineering field.
Project Lead the Way inspires students to seek a career in a STEM field. My class has many diverse nationalities, of which 60% are Hispanic, 30% African American, and the remaining 10% are other races. I have students who are English Language Learners and will benefit from the hands-on learning that they might otherwise not receive.
My Project
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and speak different languages, but the one thing they have in common is their love to make things. My young engineers love to learn with hands-on projects. We are currently working with simple circuits. They are enjoying the unit so much that we are moving on to learn about parallel circuits.
My students need LEDs, batteries, copper tape, and MakerSpace materials including a green screen software to learn about circuits while including their own personal artistic touch.
With these materials, my students will be able to create paper circuits with their own drawings ensuring that we incorporate art into their science lessons. They will learn math in determining the precise measurements for their artistic designs and in determining the materials needed to complete their project prior to beginning their work.
My students already have a green screen in our classroom. We have been using a free software for the use of the green screen, but it includes a watermark. My students are requesting the green screen software so that their video quality is as professional as that of a professional video editor.
My students will also have the ability of expanding their STEM library with the books we are requesting. The books will allow my students to have additional resources in class or try hands-on activities using the books at home.
