Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kids do not have the luxuries kids in many other districts have. Many do not have computers and, if they do, many either don't have printers or don't even have internet access. I already provide them with a place to utilize these things, but I'd like to increase my resources to help more kids.
My kids live in a California community that is spectacularly diverse, and their high school is a microcosm of the small slice of the world in which they live.
Because of this fact, many do not have access to the resources others might consider standard. It is very common for students not to have a computer at home, and it's even more common for them not to have printers and/or internet access even if they do have a computer. It is, however, common for teachers to require the use of such things in order to complete assignments. My classroom is a haven for students who need to type/print/search and I only have one laptop for too many kids to fight over. This is why I am respectfully requesting donations to help my kids overcome obstacles that will make their lives easier.
My Project
In a perfect world I would have several laptops, a handful of tablets, and a couple of printers to meet the needs of my students. As there is a limitation to what I can ask for, I narrowed it down to three items: an Apple iPad, a wireless multifunction printer, and a high-capacity flash drive. The need for the iPad is two-fold. I needed something that could serve as both a connectivity tool to my current laptop (for enhancing presentations) and a curriculum tool for students (for searching/surfing/typing/etc). The iPad will serve well in both capacities and more. The printer is, of course, a tool for students to be able to print necessary documents for free, as well as scan items that may need to be sent in a particular format. Finally, the high-capacity flash drive will be used to save any and all student work that is used on either my laptop or the iPad.
Many of my students already feel as though the world has left them behind because they do not have the things our society regards as both necessary and standard.
By donating to my classroom you are sending a message that my students deserve the same access to the items other people have, and that they matter. The feeling of knowing that people care about their academic well-being is priceless, and hopefully it will prompt them to seek out ways to help others less fortunate than themselves.
