My students need diverse books that empower young boys and young girls. Some of my students have been exposed to a few books with diverse, empowered people in history and characters, but we need more!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are a diverse group of motivated, hard-working and passionate learners. Living in an urban neighborhood in Northwest Washington, DC, some of our students find themselves below grade level or struggling to learn English. However, we provide all the resources and support to help these students reach grade level expectations by the end of each school year, by teaching them to work through the curriculum at their own pace. At our school, we emphasize that education is journey and not a competition. Through personal devices for all students grades 3-8; free breakfast, lunch and snack every day; and an extended school day so there is time for mentorship and intervention, our students are equipped with the power to overcome any challenges and reach any and all of their personal goals.
My Project
Our school community loves to inspire students to read through book clubs. Many of my students have had exposure to books about young boys and girls of color that are just like them within a book club. However, they need more books about real people, of different colors and genders that have made a difference in the world, so that they can learn they are able difference too! In addition, as my young girls and boys embark on their final year in elementary school, it is important that they learn how to become young women and men with tips and tricks from these books.
These books will expose my students to the journey of growing up and give them ideas for what they want to become once they are all grown up.
Also, these diverse books will support a curriculum unit on "inventors" in the world and my students will go into this unit with plenty of background knowledge thanks to these books. With vibrant pictures and inspirational quotes, my students are guaranteed to get drawn to these books and to get empowered along the way.
