I teach first grade in a suburban community. Our school has a population of 520 students. We are a Title 1 school with a low socio-economic and transient population. There were 62% of the children receiving free or reduced lunches during the 2004-2005 school year. The activity that I want the children to engage in, is a means of communication that is an expression of emotions and intellect. They will imagine, explore, discover, reflect, and create a product. These children have not been given the opportunity to use a variety of materials at their homes to explore and find out how things can be used. By providing sensory materials they will increase their knowledge and skills in expressing their ideas, understanding cause and effect, communicating with others, and using their creative processes. The materials that are needed for this experience will be a water play kit, spin and draw materials, and collage supplies. A classroom of 24 students will be able to use these materials this year and children in the classroom the following year, also. The children will be given the opportunity to explore, discover, and create using sensory materials a product they can share with their peers and families.
