My second grade students come to class each day with a desire to learn. Providing them with high-quality texts and stories that keep them interested and focused while still learning, is difficult. I have the privilege to teach students from diverse backgrounds.
Most of my students qualify for free or reduced price meals.
My students are English Language Learners. My students are eager to learn but lack the foundational skills in the areas of reading and writing. Background vocabulary is one of the areas that is impacting their reading comprehension skills.
My students are learning to use text features such as headings, photographs, and diagrams to answer questions. They have already used the books that we have in our classroom library. After, they have written animal reports. My students get motivated when they have a book of their choice.
Having a variety of books will allow my students to pick a book that they are eager to read.
Therefore, they will be motivated to read the same book repeated times in order to develop their fluency and reading comprehension. The ability to reread for understanding will be easier to achieve by having these great books at hand.
