My students are a very diverse group of children with one thing in common; they all attend an urban, public Montessori school. Eighty-one percent of the students qualify for free lunch and 88% of the students are a racial minority.
We follow the teachings of Maria Montessori to meet the needs of the whole child - physically, emotionally, cognitively, and spiritually through following and allowing the child to guide his or her learning.
I am fortunate to be in a school that sees music as an integral part of the child's development and encourages musical growth and expression.
My Project
We are building our Orff instrumentarium in the music classroom! When doing this it is important to have balanced instrumentation. Currently, we have lots of instruments in the upper register so we need to work on building our mid-voiced instruments.
My students love to play instruments and accompany themselves when they are singing!
This requested Series 1000 Orff Xylophone instrument and mallets will allow my students to, not only hear music that will help them stay on pitch, but also provide multiple musical lines to our music making! Additionally, we are working on creating movement and body percussion and transferring it to instruments. It is so exciting to think about doing that with this alto xylophone!
