Our school is an urban school located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The school serves students in kindergarten through grade five. Classrooms are multicultural with diverse learners spanning all grade levels.
Students in the school continuously engage collaboratively with their peers, learning to be considerate and respectful in a positive manner.
Students want to please their teachers and try to live up to both academic common core standards and classroom expectations. In general, students are ready to learn and prosper after leaving school and moving up to the middle school environment.
My Project
Students have daily independent reading time in order for students to naturally find a love of reading and build confidence. The classroom library is also available for students to sign out a book to take home and read independently or share with family members. Books such as: "Bridge to Terabithia" by Katharine Paterson and "Hoot" by Carl Hiaasen, "I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005" by Lauren Tarshis, "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library" by Chris Grabensteinand "Rosie Revere, Engineer" by Andrea Beaty... will help students improve comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. Students will also be able to take Accelerated Reading tests online to "compete" for points in the "school-wide" program. I want students to have a choice in the books they read and adding these books to my classroom library will allow for student choice.
It is my hope that allowing students to have a choice in their reading will also support them in carefully observing the work of accomplished writers....improving student writing skills at the same time.
My hope is that my English Language Learners will also benefit from audio versions of some of these books following the illustrator's pictures and words to assist in telling the story.
