Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves over 800 students in grades K-8 who come from a high poverty/low income neighborhood, and one of the most historic in the city. One hundred percent of the student population qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our staff consists of teachers who are dedicated to instilling our motto of "Si se puede" (Yes, we can) in all students.
Music is new to the school and the community is excited about the variety of musical opportunities being provided to them.
This is the first year the school district has hired a full-time certificated music teacher. My goal is to provide students with a variety of music making experiences, while building community in the school and local neighborhood. All students deserve to be provided with the opportunity of discovering what music means to them through music making activities.
I believe music can be one way to bring a group of people together. It is a way to define your identity, something that students of all age groups can use to express themselves. Offering creative outlets provides balance to people of all ages, at home, work and in the community.
My Project
To make learning fun, there are a number of games we play in music class. Many games have winners, and some times winners receive small prizes like a pencil or eraser. In addition, there is one student awarded with a "Bravo" award at the end of each class for being a good student during class. The "Bravo" student receives a paper Bravo award with their name written on it to take home and gets to sign their name on our Bravo wall posted by the door of our class.
We encourage all students to eat healthy at our school, and this project will provide nutritious snacks as rewards and incentives in our music class.
With the 20 elementary school classes I see once a week, I would like to raffle a prize once a week as an added incentive for being selected as a "Bravo" student. Instead of giving something like a pencil, offering a healthy snack like a pretzel or fruit pack provides something they can use instantly while supporting healthy eating habits.
In addition, healthy snacks will be given as a prize for student winners in games such as BINGO and elimination games. Healthy snacks will be added to the "Prize" box so students have the option of having a snack to enjoy immediately or whenever they desire. Finally, I could not do my job without extra assistance from volunteer students who want to help tidy up the room or organize instruments. Those special helpers will have the option of selecting something from the "Prize" box, which will now include healthy snacks due to this project.
