My Students

My school is in a rural area with limited access to bigger cities. We have 62.4% economically challenged on free and reduced cost lunches.

My students are dedicated, but struggling readers!

They enjoy hands-on, active, engaging lessons with challenging mixed student interests, abilities, and goals. They appreciate the multicultural lessons that I plan for class activities to help build reading comprehension skills.

We, as a school, are focusing on literature because our scores need to improve. Therefore, I incorporate science fiction literature into my lessons to help with getting students interested in reading.

My Project

As a reading specialist, I work with 9th/10th grade struggling reluctant readers in my Critical Reading class. So, as an educator, I will use what the students like to help build their skills in reading comprehension using popular relevant materials.

Literature works of science fiction can enrich teaching, enthusiasm, and learning for more enhanced reading comprehension.

Students feel more comfortable and familiar with pop culture genres. Science fiction novels help focus on specific ways to integrate pop culture to capture the interest of reluctant readers by tearing down their walls, and leads to strengthening students' ability to sustain critical engagement in an academic context.
