This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students love being in book club! The challenge is providing enough books for everyone and selecting captivating titles. Every year twelve books are nominated in Missouri to receive the Truman Award, sponsored by the Missouri Association of School Librarians. Students who read the nominees are eligible to vote for their favorite book in March. The book with the most votes receives the Truman Award. My book club wants to be a part of the selection process.
My students come from a low income, urban area.
Most are eager to achieve if given the opportunity but usually do not have the resources needed.
The school is located in a depressed, urban setting. Funds are not available for anything other than the minimum requirements to get by.
My Project
Our book club will meet monthly to discuss the book we have chosen to read for the month. We will meet after school in the library in a relaxed setting, enjoying some snacks while having a meaningful discussion. The discussion will include questioning to provoke extended thinking skills along with making connections to their own lives and experiences.
The communication arts teacher and I will collaborate to make sure we take advantage of the atmosphere to create meaningful experiences and relationships with the students.
Having multiple copies of the same title will allow me to continue our book club.
My students love being a part of book club. It creates a motivational and stimulating group. Students will develop a life long love of reading. The strong readers motivate the others to keep up and improve their reading skills because they all want to participate.
Reading the Truman nominees will allow the book club be a part of something even bigger than their own club.
