My students need a selection of Newbery Medal Honor books in our classroom library to spark their interest and foster their love for learning.
Our day begins with reading. If students are not excited to pick up the book they have chosen to read, they are not excited to start their day. My students have limited access to great literature, so I want to bring it to them.
The majority of my students are English Language Learners.
All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch based on their socio-economic backgrounds. They come from loving, caring homes with parents who want to create a better life for their children. They are amazing kids who are hungry to learn more about the world outside of the four walls of our classroom.
Most of my students are reading below grade level and when you ask them if they like reading they say no. This is devastating to me as an avid reader and educator. My hope is that after a year in my classroom, and with every Newbery Medal Honor book at their finger tips, my students will find their love for reading. Thirty minutes a day is set aside for students to read a book of their choosing, while I have the opportunity to conference with 5-6 of them a day. We discuss what they are reading, where they are struggling, and set goals in areas in which they can improve their reading. Being able to chose a book from my library will allow the students to take their time enjoying it as well as taking it home to share with their families.
This new library will affect students for many years to come.
It will help make my library a rich resource for all levels of readers to find something they love about reading. I hope with this new library I will instill a thirst for life-long reading in each of my students.
