Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in Fresno Unified School District. My students require a high level of rigor and differentiated learning. My students are creative thinkers who love to use technology to customize presentations and access the world around them. In addition, these students are very verbal and enjoy sharing their thoughts and creative thinking in the classroom.
My students love a good book.
We try to complete at least four Novels per year. Although my school has a lot of book sets, most of the books are old and out-dated. I would like to gather a new set of books that is intriguing and relevant to our study of Refuges and Immigration.
My students are highly motivated when given the right opportunities and bored without a challenge. Therefore, the more technology, innovation and resources in our classroom results in higher levels of engagement.
This year as a district we are focusing on collaboration and discourse in the classroom. As a result, I am trying to implement activities and curriculum that lend to group talk among partners, teams and our class as a whole. We have been incorporating Book Clubs with another 5th Grade classroom this year.
My Project
I had a small group of four read this book this year and they LOVED IT! I want to be able to make it available to my entire class as part of our Refugee and Immigration Unit. This book is an award-winner and the student's that read it loved the surprise ending. We really need good, diverse books that help students to understand world issues and making a difference in people's lives. I hope to bring this book to more of my students every year and it is based on a true story of triumph over hard-ship. Great read for my grade level!!
