This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are determined! Everyday they are making a serious commitment to improve their intellects and their academic abilities! To keep them on their journey towards ultimate success we need a steady supply of great books for them to read and think deeply about!

We are located in the South Bronx which is ground-zero for childhood poverty.

Our students' and their families cannot afford to buy books. Our school budget has been cut for five consecutive years. Our good books are simply too few to continue to fuel the vast and hungry imaginations of our diverse group of students! This is why I have written this grant to you. We desperately need your help to get these great books and help our amazing students progress to higher reading levels. We use the Reader's Workshop model from Columbia Teacher's College. What that means is that each student is expected to read a book at his or her reading level. To accomplish this task we must at all times have a multitude of interesting books at a variety of reading levels. The books I have carefully chosen for this grant would help our classroom library to meet these goals. These books would immediately day one that we receive them be used by students to improve their reading comprehension.

My Project

Book clubs can change the world! Book clubs bring a social power to the study of literacy. Students read books together and discover ideas together through discussion and debate. Students study ideas of theme, setting, and author's craft to better improve their own reading comprehension and their own writing abilities! Book clubs are amazing and the books we have requested for this grant are diverse in content including everything from fashion, basketball, and being stranded on the moon! These books are all award winners and will help push our students in their goals of studying great literature and also to improve their writing by having great writers as mentors through these books! "The Crossover" is a tale of basketball and coming of age during a time of adversity! This book will resonate in our learning community! "I'll Give You the Sun", "Popular", and "The Martian" are also award winning books that will make our literary offerings to our students much stronger!

Please help us provide our students with the powerful ideas in these inspiring books!

I have bought books on my own but a teacher's salary doesn't give the liberty for the kind of philanthropy that our student truly need. Please help us by providing these essential resources for our wonderful students! We thank your for your continuing support for our cause. The betterment of our students is the betterment of our world. Thank you and god bless!
