My students need access to updated books like Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, the story of the Johansen family's attempt to save the Jewish people in Denmark during WWII.

My Students

My students are demographically and economically diverse. The school attracts students from all income levels. Quite a few children from foster homes attend the school. Some students have recently been homeless.

We work hard to help every student feel welcome.

We start every morning with a welcoming Morning Meeting. We learn how to properly greet each other. Creating that sense of belonging goes a long way to help every student be successful academically and socially.

The diversity is what makes our school special. It is also what attracted me to this school.

My Project

My amazing students need access to engaging books for shared reading and novel studies. Sadly, our school's book sets are very outdated.

Lois Lowry's, Number the Stars, is a Newberry Award Winning story about a 10 year-old girl helping the Jewish people escape from Denmark during WWII.

While reading this novel, we will also learn about historical fiction. The author has provided a chapter detailing which details are facts and which are fiction.

I hope that this book will inspire my students to see that they too have untapped bravery to use during difficult times. Thank you for your consideration.
