Our 7th and 8th grade AVID students from Idaho have what it takes to go wherever their dreams take them. AVID students are taught learning strategies in the areas of writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading, preparing and empowering them for high school and beyond.
Our AVID students are energetic, curious, creative, brave and are ready to learn and take on new challenges each and every day.
They are encouraged to take rigorous courses so that they are better prepared for whatever obstacles lie ahead. They are also exposed to the various post-secondary opportunities so that they have a sense of direction and can set goals for their future.
This amazing group of students is so impressive and have reminded me why I went into education. The sense of community that the students have built within the program is inspiring and uplifting. It is so exciting and fulfilling to be a part of this program.
My Project
Our AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program helps students become ready for college and beyond! AVID students learn strategies in the areas of writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to help prepare them for wherever they want to go in life after high school. Students work together to develop and deepen their understanding of topics through participation in Socratic Seminars and tutorials. Currently, our AVID classroom has 25 desks, making it difficult to participate in the collaboration activities. Additionally, students lack the flexibility to work in different locations throughout the classroom.
AVID students will be more engaged in their work and better able to collaborate when they have options of where they can work together with their classmates.
The products I have selected will help our AVID students have a better place to collaborate with one another and will increase their productivity. By having tables and stools, our students will be able to collaborate and participate in their tutorials and Socratic seminars much easier and more effectively. The beanbag chairs and pub table and chairs will offer AVID students comfortable seating choices so they can work together. By allowing students to make choices that are best for them, the classroom becomes a more positive learning environment and students are able to take charge of their own learning.
