My students need these folders, notebooks, markers and much more to help them be fully engaged in their reading and writing. These materials will help me keep them engaged in authentic reading and writing activities.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have had the opportunity to get to know many of my incoming second graders as I observed their growth next door and across the hall from me. As first graders they proved to be active souls who loved to be engaged in their learning. They show a range of abilities and come with the typical educational tags such as "ENL" or "504 ". But we don't do labels in second grade. The only titles we take on are AVID Readers and Writers! In order to become AVID readers and writers my students will strive every day to work towards goals that they set for themselves with my assistance.
We use a growth mindset that tells us we can achieve success through practice, through making mistakes, and through using organizational skills to take our learning to the next step.
My students have the ability and the energy to work towards the high expectations set by the Common Core Standards. Creativity and tenacity are two other qualities that make my students stand out in a crowd. They are a special group of kids that will amaze me every day.
My Project
Organization is at the heart of my project. The 3 different colored folders will help my students keep their reading and writing organized. The notebooks will serve as dialogue journals which will be used by my students to record their thoughts about what they are reading and also serve as a space for me to give specific feedback.
The dry erase materials and the magnetic letters/paper will serve many purposes.
They will be used by my students during both whole group and small group time. Some students who are still struggling with letter sounds and basic phonic patterns will be using them to help facilitate their growth.
The glue sticks are another tool we will use in their reading journals. We will use be using graphic organizers that will help make the journals interactive.
