Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

AVID means Advancement Via Individual Determination. I have been teaching this program for three years at Sussman Middle School. Sussman Middle School is located in the city of Downey. We are mostly Hispanic in a low socioeconomic neighborhood. AVID is a class that specifically helps minority students get better grades in school. We focus on how to be better students. The class is an elective, but a one year commitment is required. In class; we learn skills to help us become better students, we work twice a week with college tutors, we hear guest speakers talk about their careers or college experiences, and we attend field trips. I would very much like to take 35 AVID students with 2 adults on one bus, on a field trip, to the Museum of Tolerance. I believe the field trip would be a fabulous experience for my mostly Latino students. Not only is it a great experience for any groups of kids, but teaching tolerance to a minority group wanting to go to college seems to be a perfect fit.
