My Students

I have some amazing students at EMS. They are striving to learn during some of the most difficult times our world has ever gone through. In spite of all this, they show up every day overcoming innumerable obstacles to try and learn! This is especially impressive for students who suffer from learning disabilities. This can cause them to struggle in all their classes. Many remain invisible and teachers and other students don't realize all that they are going through. These are true heroes to keep trying each and every day even though it is so hard for them.

My Project

Many students, especially those with learning disabilities, are having a difficult time processing all the emotions they experience during school, especially during a pandemic. I turned my office into a break room for my students to use when they are overstimulated or feeling overwhelmed during the day. Sometimes all they need if 5 minutes to take a break, reset, and process what they are feeling, then they are ready to learn again! I want to make this a safe space for them where they can go with plenty of sensory materials and comfort. A printer will help me print off coloring pages and other materials that they enjoy. Many times students also like to earn a printed picture as a reward. Rewards are most effective when given immediately after the positive behavior. By having a printer in my room, I can reward students for their hard work without having to delay or leave the classroom.
