This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am an English teacher in a small suburban district outside of Pittsburgh. I teach Language Arts, and I love my job. I've been at my school for 24 years. My students come from economically-distressed neighborhoods. We work very hard to give them the best education possible.
When people ask me about my job, I tell them I have the opportunity to get kids excited about reading great books.
It's an amazing feeling to see the moment a story hooks a kid. There's that moment where nothing else matters, just what's going to happen next in the story. With your help, I can put those books in my kids' hands.
My Project
Thanks for taking a moment to read about my latest project. I am trying to replace my very worn class set of Treasure Island novels. I have been teaching this story for twenty years, and my books have had it!
Treasure Island is a timeless story of adventure, loyalty, and honor.
Well over 100 years old, this book still engages kids with the exploits of its adolescent protagonist Jim Hawkins and his quest for buried pirate treasure. It's an exciting book filled with plot twists and memorable characters. But like any well-loved and much-read book, mine are falling apart at the seams. I'd like to replace them for next school year.
