Hi, I'm Mr. W. The students in my classroom may have Autism, but that's not stopping them from working to their full potential. We want our students to be included in regular education classrooms with their peers. Having easily accessible technology at our finger tips helps make this possible.
The students in my classroom all have varying forms of Autism, but they are all hard working and fun loving kids.
Some are higher functioning and receive support in the regular education classroom. While others need more direct support in the Autistic Support room.
At our school we try to have the students included in regular education as much as we can. While a lot of the regular education materials are modified to the students current abilities, they still can feel like part of the group, and learn from their peers. We have found that having them with their peers helps them socially both in and out of the classroom.
My Project
An iPad mini would be a great asset to the students in our Autistic Support classroom. Like most students, they all love technology and they have fun with lessons or apps presented on the iPad. While we do have access to one iPad in the Autistic Support room, an iPad mini would be a great tool to use while the Autistic Support students are in the regular education classroom.
As you find with many children who have Autism, they respond really well to visuals and different ways of explaining things. The availability of an iPad mini to help further explain something, take notes, or show a visual while in the regular education classroom would be a more seamless transition than pulling out a clunky laptop, like we currently have available to us, or moving to the back of the room to use a desktop. With the help of an iPad mini, the student can stay at his/her desk, and be less of a distraction to his/her peers.
Donations to this project will help my students learn to be more independent by having a tool with a world of information available in a small package.
Meanwhile, they can continue to be part of the larger group and learn important social and interpersonal skills from their peers.
