My Students

"It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are." ~e.e. cummings The students in my classroom face challenges on a daily basis. Yet, they are the most courageous, witty, and resourceful students that I know. They embrace the opportunity for learning and becoming who they really are.

I have nine wonderful students, grades 6-8, with Autism and/or cognitive delays in my classroom.

Although each student is at a different level of learning, they all wish to be academically successful. My goal as their teacher is to help them realize their full potential and to give them life long learning skills. Our school is a public elementary school in a high poverty area in Illinois. Our school does not have the extra funds available to enhance the classroom materials. Likewise, the parents do not have the extra funds to donate materials to the classroom. I am counting on the generous support of donors like you to help me make my classroom a fantastic learning adventure for my students!

My Project

All of the materials I am ordering will provide my students with a hands on learning experience for Science. A good majority of my students are not able to read so having activities where they can see, feel and manipulate the materials will allow them to process the information presented in a manner in which they will benefit. The science learning games allow the students to touch and see the item being described. They will learn categorization skills from this. They will also be able to learn about simple science concepts such as living and non-living in a fun, exciting way. The "I Can Do It" series will allow us to complete mini-experiments within the classroom that will be simple enough for all of my students to complete giving them self-confidence to expand their knowledge. Also, because all of my students are at different learning levels (pre-k through 4th grade) I can adjust these materials to fit the current learning level they are at.

Although my students have special needs, it is important for them to be exposed to scientific concepts.

Within my classroom, I have 9 students that are performing from pre-k to 4th grade academic levels. I do not have textbooks to teach them from so all of the material I present to them I research on the internet or compile from several different books. Having these science materials will allow me to teach all of the students the same concepts from one source of information.
