Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My middle school students are intelligent, thoughtful, and kind! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow academically and socially. However, this is a challenge for them because each of my students also has autism spectrum disorder.
Because of this, some of their best qualities are sometimes hidden due to lack of ability to express themselves appropriately.
Each of the students in my self-contained classroom has struggled in general education in the past, and is anxious about attending gen. ed. classes. They are also uncomfortable learning to navigate the complex social structure that is middle-school in order to meet others and begin forming friendships with their neurotypical peers.
Our school is located in West Michigan and all students that attend receive free breakfast and lunch. The students in my classroom come from all over the county to attend this brand new program aimed at providing them the opportunity to interact with and attend classes with their typical peers.
My Project
Students with autism have different sensory needs than neurotypical students. These students require softer lights, more movement, and more frequent breaks to be able to focus on their schoolwork. They need games and activities to use with peers to learn and practice social skills, as well as sensory equipment to help them learn to self-regulate.
These materials will make a huge difference in the lives of these students by outfitting their sensory room.
Utilizing these items will allow students to burn off extra energy, get their sensory needs met, and learn and practice valuable social skills with their typical peers.
