Help me give my students with autism chairs that will help them learn how to regulate their bodies to help them focus and pay attention during learning opportunities. We will not use the detachable buckles.
Despite all the heavy challenges related to their autism diagnosis, my little guys just keep pushing forward and continue to knock out their learning targets left and right. Whether it's watching yet another person turn excited when they experience "K's" electric smile or enjoying "Ky" happy and thriving after working so hard to get his "whopper" tantrums from 14 to zero times a day, you just never want to leave the room so you don't miss anything!
What feels "normal" to a typical person may feel like "too much" or "not enough" for children with autism to process (e.g., sounds, movements, visual input).
In order for "C" to feel "normal" he needs to climb up high on shelves and tables. Not only is he now working at a table but he has enrolled in a community gymnastics program! "R" toughed out turning his string wiggling obsession into the ability to play with pull toys.
Everybody deserves a friend like "Y." He is the winner of the Random Acts of Kindness all school reward. Please believe me when I say that I am keenly aware of how lucky I am to be their teacher.
My Project
Children with autism often experience the world differently than a typical person. In addition to sensory challenges, this is often due to their extreme difficulties with body in space disconnections. They may not know where you start and they begin.
Body awareness is key.
If you don't know where your body parts are it's difficult, if not impossible, to sit at a table and pay attention which results in constant missed learning opportunities. By donating to the purchase of adaptive seating, you will be responsible for helping 6 little children organize their bodies for learning. Then, the sky is the limit.
