Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am requesting funding for equipment for a sensory room. The students that will benefit from the equipment are served within 5 classrooms that support students identified as having Autism. The students have difficulty with being able to access the educational curriculum due their inability to regulate their sensory systems. Since these students are cognitively impaired and often have physical disabilities and are non-verbal or have limited ability to communicate, they become agitated easily.
The equipment I am requesting funding for will aid the students in calming down and to regulate their sensory systems.
My Project
The items requested through our project will support our students' ability to remain calm or regain a calm, alert state conducive to learning.
We need a plush sofa, bean bag, chairs, weighted blankets, and massage mats.
These sensory tools will help our students. When they become agitated, they tend to stay in a cycle of agitation/frustration until they are able to calm down. During these times they often cry for long periods of time, become aggressive toward teachers or other children in the class. When the students have the use of these tools throughout the instructional period, they are able to remain calm longer and can then struggle with a difficult task they are learning and come closer to mastering the task.
