My students need items such as weighted blankets and compression vests to help remind them that they are at school. Sensory fights and balls keep my students engaged.
I teach the most severe type of autism class in my district. I have between 8 and 9 students who are working on individual goals all day long. We focus primarily on communication and life skills but also work on reaching curriculum standards. Typically my students work 1-1 with breaks scheduled in.
I teach an autism class for students with intensive academic or behavioral needs.
Most of my students are nonverbal so the primary focus of my class is providing my students with a way to communicate. For most of my students this will be the use of a picture exchange communication system which will allow them to communicate their needs. The second focus of my class is independence. I want to teach my students how to do things for themselves. My class is in a suburb and there are two other intensive autism classes on my site. My classroom is new so I am still building it from the ground up.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will be used in a sensory area of my classroom. These materials, such as weighted blankets and compression vests, will help to calm and ground my students. Chewys and fights also give my students something to help them stay focused during work time. The yoga ball will be used both as a seat to help my students who need to move during station time as well as an option in the break area. The puzzles and balls will be a great way for my students to take a quiet break. These items will help teach my students to self regulate and eventually to self soothe.
Donations to this project will allow me to meet the very specific needs of my students.
Most of my students suffer from a sensory processing disorder; the items I am requesting will allow me to give my students opportunities for sensory input. These items will also give my students the opportunity to move during the day which will allow them to be more focused during work time. Finally the items I am requesting will be used as tools during work time to help my students stay at stations longer.
