Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are strong, fun, hard-working high school students that are on the autism spectrum. The students are in my self-contained classroom due to multiple-factors such as: cognitive functioning, sensory issues, aggressive or self-injurious behavior. Most of the students start at the high school being in my class almost all day but the goal is to progress each student as they are able to environments that enable them to better function in the community.

The best part of my job is when one of my students shows me how to see the world from his/her angle, and the view is amazing.

These teenagers have a lot to share. They are full of knowledge that we just need to tap into. My students are unbelievable with technology. The technology we have today and my seeing how the students use it has opened ways for me to teach them.

The students in my classroom fill my heart with such joy but other students in the high school make me proud. When my class walks in the hall in our quirky unique way, the other students smile or just let us pass like we are the norm. I LOVE IT!

My Project

I am creating a craft area in my classroom. People on the autism spectrum may be able to see things from a different perspective. They may process color, light, visual images and touch unlike any other individual even others that are on the autism spectrum. The goal is to have a place to go to paint, color, use clay, do pottery, do ceramics and any other visual art form. This creative outlet helps them identify and express their emotions. This may help reduce the challenges they face in the world. The storage unit would help keep things organized and provide space to put the equipment in the craft area. With this storage unit my students will easily be able to take care of their favorite items and find their items when they need them.
