My students are unique and special. They are all special needs students. They are living in a world that often times sees them as broken or " different". I see them as individuals that are trying to learn their grade level standards, while facing many added obstacles that regular education or gifted children don't face. Not only are they trying catch up, they are trying to keep up as well.
"When you judge someone based on a diagnosis, you miss out on their abilities, beauty, and uniqueness"( Sevenly).
These children all have something to offer to the class. Some are diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, Speech impairments, Autism and a variety of other diagnoses. They all have abilities to learn and succeed, just not at the rate of some of their peers. Their uniqueness makes them special.
They are integrated into a classroom with regular education children as well as gifted children. They all work together to form the classroom community. It takes all of these children, special needs, regular education, and gifted, to make up our unique and diverse class. As Plato said, "Never discourage anyone who continually makes progress, no matter how slow".
My Project
My classroom is made up of children with special needs. We are sometimes in a resource room with only 4 or 5 students. Other times we are in an inclusion room with regular ed and gifted students. The ability level is across the board. The materials I have asked for will not only benefit my special needs students but will also aid in the education and understanding of the regular ed students.
You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.
"Clay P. Bedford"
The items I am asking for will inspire and help the students to learn and grow. My autistic students will benefit by having hands on opportunities and the books are about students with autism. These books will also allow the regular ed and gifted students to gain a better understanding of their peers.I want my students to have many opportunities to learn together and independently. They are an amazing group of caring, kind, and curious students.
