Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students that have a moderate to severe autism spectrum disorder. Students in our program range in age from 4 to 6 years. We have 12 students enrolled in our class currently. My students benefit from strong routines and a structured based program. All areas of instruction need to be very clearly defined with visual supports posted and modifications made to instructional materials as well as the classroom environment to ensure the success of each child. Most students in our program require an individual picture schedule that clearly indicates each transition that will occur throughout the day. Our program is on a typical public school campus giving us opportunities to mainstream the kids with neurotypical children daily.
Our goal is to provide intensive early intervention so that our students are able to interact and learn in a general education setting when provided modifications and supports.
Students work in small group rotations with two students and one adult to address behavioral, social, academic, communication, life skill and sensory needs throughout the day.
My Project
Many individuals with Autism Spectrum have difficulty managing their sensory input. Our student may over- or under- react to visual, tactile, and aural input, sometimes to the point where they are unable to participate in typical school day activities.
These items are all designed and can be implemented to help our classroom environment react to a students needs in regards to light, sound, physical pressure, small and taste.
Many of our students with SPD are under-responsive and have an almost insatiable desire for sensory stimulation. These objects will help create a learning environment where their unique needs are met and they can thrive.
