This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Remember playing in the toy area of your early childhood classroom, creating memories and making new friends? My students need new toys to help them do the same!
I teach six amazing students with autism.
My students fall all along the autism spectrum. I have students who are nonverbal, students who are using pictures to communicate, and students who are working on using their words more and more. My students work on a wide variety of skills, including pre-academic and academic skills, social skills, communication skills, and play skills.
My Project
We will use the new toys in our classroom to help build play skills. Students with autism oftentimes lack pretending and imagination skills, making play time difficult. With our new community helper dolls, zoo animals, and tool kit, we will have the opportunity to work on everything from basic play skills to dramatic play. We will also use the divider from this project to designate a specific play area.
These toys will help improve our classroom play area, giving my students more options when they play.
More importantly, these toys will help my students increase their play skills, thus expanding their relationships with their peers and siblings.
