Ms. Katsnelson from Brooklyn NY is requesting Educational Kits & Games through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Autism Awareness- Social Skills Games

My students need new board games to promote social skills development. I am asking for simple board games such as Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, and more to promote valuable turn taking, commenting, and winning/losing skills.

My Students

As a speech therapist in a low-income special education elementary school, I see different students every day who need a variety of multi-sensory activities to target their individual needs.

My students are adorable, friendly 5 to 8 year-olds, who have speech, language, and feeding difficulties as a result of Autism and other developmental disorders.

Many of them are nonverbal or minimally verbal, and would benefit from toys and activities to promote their language production, comprehension, and play skills. My students struggle to engage with peers appropriately, play with toys in a functional manner, and use language for a variety of purposes to ask questions, to ask for help, to comment on what they see, to state their names, etc. They often show their intelligence through music-signing along to wheels on the bus, dancing to the beat during freeze dance, and art-drawing pictures of classmates, matching colors and items.

My Project

My students at elementary schoolers who are on the severe end of the Autism Spectrum. They are working on improving their social skills, either by using their words or using a voice output device to speak for them. During group therapy sessions, we work on turn taking, commenting (e.g. wow! good job! I got ...), answering peer questions (e.g. what did you get?) and the very important skill of being a good winner/loser.

Unfortunately, we are in need of social skills board games that are age appropriate yet simple enough for our children to understand.

I am asking for popular games such as Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, Ants in Your Pants, and Don't Spill the Beans to help my students work on their speech and language goals while still understanding game play and having fun!

Please help us help our students!
