This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My second-grade students have become inspired to read and write by our studies of several children's book author/illustrators. I choose an author, and for several weeks we learn about the author, read his or her books, write about the books, draw in his or her style, and end our study with a celebration of the author.
My second-grade students are more engaged and eager to read when they bring prior knowledge to the books we share. Each time they read or listen to a book by an author they know, they are better able to make connections between books, characters, and with their own lives. I have been thrilled to see them come back from the school library eager to read books by Kevin Henkes, Ezra Jack Keats, and Tomie dePaola, all authors we know.
I am writing this proposal to increase my library of books that I can use for future authors studies. In particular, I want my children, who are all African-American, to read books by African-American authors. The author/illustrators I have chosen are Faith Ringgold, Eloise Greenfield, and John Steptoe. In addition to books by these authors, I have also requested a video documenting Ringgold's work as an artist and reprints of her work to use as part of our Faith Ringgold celebration.
