Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to our small charter school so that they will not get lost in the over two thousand student local high school. Their parents have big dreams for their children but many lack the knowledge of how to get to college. Over 90% of our students will be first generation college students and many have parents who did not have the opportunity to go to high school.
Graduation day is amazing at our school.
Watching a student be the first one in their family to walk across the stage and receive a diploma, is a life-changing experience. Knowing that they are on their way to college makes all the hard work worthwhile.
My Project
My students live in a world where most the of words they see were written by white authors. Many of them tell me that they don't like to read, yet I know that being a good reader is essential for success in college.
Help me fill my classroom library with young adult novels that are written by authors of color that look like my students.
Although my primary job is to teach math, I have an advisory class and we have sustained silent reading. SSR is much more effective if I have good books for the students to choose from. Reading is one of my favorite hobbies and I want to share that love with my students. I love when a student asks me for help choosing a book and I can direct them to their new favorite.
