My students need to have a printer in our classroom so they can actually write stories and print them right away instead of having to wait for me to get home to print.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time you saw something you wrote appear in ink because it came out of a printer? My kids want to see that in action. Most of us take printers for granted, but my students don't own one at home and rarely see anything printed.
Poverty shouldn't mean that their education is less than anyone else in the same area, but it does.
They see students on tv who have computers at home and printers at home. They know that even though their school is in a nice neighborhood, that they don't have what other schools have. One printer won't make a difference in most classrooms, but in mine it can change a child's world! As we write poetry and short stories, I will be able to print the papers and we will be able to make books. Many of my students shuffle back in forth between homeless shelters. I have a student who lives in his car right now. Anything that I can do to make their lives feel richer, I want to be able to do.
My Project
Can you even imagine that there is a classroom in 2014 that doesn't have a printer for classroom use? Well, in my room we do not have one. I have one printer I purchased to print pictures when I take them of the students, but no printer to print actual papers. Thanks to Donor's Choose, I usually am able to get more ink for my photo printer. Some groups would like to research topics and write reports, but we can only do this by hand. Last month DC funded 4 iPads for my classroom. We are hoping that this printer will allow us to write on our iPads and then print the work.
This printer will change my students lives for several years to come.
They will see their work in print and know that they matter enough. We have buddies who they would like to write letters too, and printing them would help so much more. A printer in a classroom should be assumed to be in every teacher's room, but for the last 4 years, my room has not had this luxury. Thanks to DC, this will become a needed asset in my class.
