Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
First grade is an essential year for developing skills in reading and writing. Students' attitudes about literacy directly impact their ability to learn to read and write.
I am a first grade teacher at Flowery Elementary School in Sonoma CA, in a dual immersion Spanish/English program. One powerful way to foster a love of reading and writing in all languages is by having the students write their own stories and read them to peers, parents, community volunteers, family members, big buddies, the principal and anyone else who will listen.
A bookbinding machine will allow students to “publish” their work in order to show it off and bring it home. Because of the low-income level of my students' families, many children have very few books at home. A bookbinding machine would allow the children to make their own books to bring home.
One of the most satisfying and reinforcing projects for students will be at the end of the year, after the students have worked so hard on their book writing and publishing, when we will hold an authors' tea. We will invite the principal, counselor, librarian, kitchen staff, maintenance crew, and of course the students' families to come listen to the students read their published books. Thank you for considering helping make this a possibility for my students.
