Help me give my students a lifelong connection to books and writing. During the month of February, I would like to host an author visit, particularly an African-American author, who will discuss his journey as a black author.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our library is the heart of our school and is a place of refuge for many of our students. A large percentage of our students experience chaos and inconsistency at home and need a quiet, safe place during the day. Our library not only meets that need, but also provides a place where reading and learning can take on new meanings.
We strive to ensure all students have access to quality literature, value the importance of digital literacy, and become critical thinkers.
We reach beyond skill and drill uses of technology, and vow to produce students who are successful regardless of life’s challenges.
The past two years have been especially challenging for our students. COVID-19 has limited our resources, and limited the interactions some students have with quality literature. In order to provide the same level of academics, our library has searched for creative ways to connect with our young scholars.
During the month of February, we will focus on creative writing and the steps needed to publish a book. This Oklahoma author will read his book and then speak with the scholars about his journey as a black author. He will discuss the process for self-publishing, editing, and other themes related to creating and publishing books.
Our school has some amazing writers and avid readers who might be interested in this field but have not yet recognized their potential.
We want them to know that they can be authors too. Our 3rd/4th-grade hallway showcases Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), which is the focus of this children's book. At the conclusion of the event, each student will receive a copy of the book.
