Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time you sat in an executive style chair? Do you remember the authority, power and confidence you felt as you sat there? These are the same qualities I want my fifth grade readers and writers to experience as they share their published pieces from a new authors' chair.
My students face so many challenges, but they realize that education is the vehicle to drive them towards a more promising future.
With so many issues, it is my mission as their educator to take them away and rescue them from their pressing worries through the joys of meaningful experiences and exposure to what life has to offer. Our school is 100% poverty stricken; with only one other in the state of South Carolina. We don't take this rank as an excuse to have a pity party, but rather as a means of motivation. We strive to plant seeds of hope and reassure the students that education is the key that unlocks the doors of opportunity and future success. By understanding that there is more to life than what meets the eye, it is my belief that my students will do what it takes to beat the odds, defy the statistics and embrace the world of education and all it has to offer.
My Project
Our writing process model views writing as an ongoing process. Students are given a set of procedures for planning, drafting, revising, editing and finally publishing. It allows students to be at various stages of writing process at one time. Collaboration with peers is also inherent in this model. Our new authors' chairs will inspire competent writers to expand their craft even farther and struggling writers to persevere. Students really enjoy sharing their finalized, published pieces with their classmates and will truly enjoy the attention and focus sitting in an official authors' chair will bring.
Currently when students share, they have no other options besides standing up.
I would love to have official authors' chairs that students can use while reading their written pieces. I am certain this will help students learn to be comfortable and confident while reading in front of an audience. Please join us in this effort and bring this project to life.
