My Students
My classroom is a self-contained 5th-grade classroom where students learn academic content, but most importantly, how to be responsible for their own learning. In addition to math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, my students practice study skills and discover how they learn best.
Fast paced lives and electronics makes it difficult to inspire kids to read. Finding ways to engage students to read by choice is important to build their stamina and develop a life long habit of reading.
My Project
An author study requires access to a variety of high quality books that appeal to students. The volume and variety required provides lots of opportunities for differentiation and student engagement. Having books available to engage students with choice makes launching an author study more successful.
When a student finds an author they love, they are much more likely to read and enjoy reading. Positive and communal reading experiences can spark a life-long interest in reading. An author study also builds a classroom community through shared reading experiences.
I have chosen award winning authors that will expose my students to different genres, humor, and important life lessons. Studying author's opens students' eyes to the possibility of changing the world with words. It will foster my students' reading skills, stimulate their critical thinking skills, and improve their writing.
