Our school is a health and nutrition school in a city district of New York. The school serves grades pre-kindergarten through third grade. We are a tight-knit school where the students love to be in school. The students need fun and engaging activities to foster their love of learning at a young age.
Many of my students come from immigrant homes where English is not their first language.
This has not hindered their enthusiasm and curiosity. They have questions and ideas but are always in need of resources for inspiration and reference.
My Project
All of these books have main characters of color and are written and/or illustrated by people of color. I want my students to see that they are a valued part of society. They are authors, artists and they are main characters and heroes! I also want them to learn that are different cultures in the world and to understand there are different human experiences. I want my students to understand that there will be times in life that are unfair and the different tools and strategies on how they can deal with that. Most importantly, I want them to know that they are an integral part of the world.
Literature can spark deep conversations and questions about our world!
For students to see themselves as writers, they need to know that there are many stories to be told and told from people of color!
