This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are funny, intelligent, creative kids with big dreams. They never cease to surprise me with their ideas for improving the world around them. They love to read and create, and are constantly giving me ideas for improving our media program.
They have a sense of agency and confidence that leads them through their learning experiences both in person and online.
Nearly 100% of my students qualify for free and reduced price lunch and the COVID pandemic has given us a new set of challenges to face and overcome. That said, my students come to school (via Zoom) each day excited and ready to learn. It is because of my students that I can say I have the best job ever. They deserve the best experiences that online school has to offer which is why I am writing this grant.
My Project
I want my students to meet the author behind some of their favorite books. I also want them to learn more about writing and reading and how literature can be a tool for change. I know this visit could benefit my students in multiple ways.
Our library program focuses on changemakers, and Kelly Starling Lyons is offering a program "The Power to Create Change." This aligns perfectly with the discussions we have been having all year and I know my students would be engaged and excited!
This year has been a challenging one with COVID 19 and remote learning. I would love to give them this positive experience admit these challenging times.
