Author Studies Build a Love of Reading in First Grade

My Students

My students are curious, active, and motivated first graders. They come to school each day ready to take on the world, and learn everything new they can. Although there is a diverse skill level in the area of literacy, they are all energetic learners and focused on improving their reading levels. They love to settle in and quietly read from their book boxes or bookshelf, and choose new books to challenge themselves. Reading to self is a preferred time of every day.

My Project

As first grade students become independent readers, it's important to get them hooked on reading. A series or familiar author and characters can increase skills like character analysis, plot, themes, and story elements. Students can begin to make connections between favorite authors and characters in preferred series.

During our Daily 5 instruction, students practice reading for fluency and expression while reading to self and reading to a partner.

Having books with characters that students love and are familiar with can grow their love of reading. I want my students to enjoy reading and develop into lifelong readers. Having books by these familiar authors with those beloved, familiar characters will give the opportunity to connect illustrations to text, practice fluency and comprehension, and be enthusiastic readers.
