My students need 30 blank books and markers to learn that they are writers and illustrators.

Third graders have a story to tell. Just ask anyone of them, and you will be told a story that is awe-inspiring. "I am an author!" is what one of my students said to me. I want my students to become the authors and illustrators of their stories.
I have a classroom full of vociferous third graders.
They enjoy reading, writing, and drawing. Like most young learners, they learn best by doing. Materials that are hands-on capture their attention. Each day they come to school with stories to tell about the flowers they saw blooming, the reason they did not do their homework, or what it would be like to be a hundred years old. Our school is in an urban area in Tennessee. Resources are limited. Unique projects are impossible to fund.
I want my students to take their "story" and become an author. The blank books and markers will allow them to do just this-become an author. I am going to have the students come up with an idea. Then they are going to create a graphic organizer to give Their idea some direction. After this, they are going to create a draft copy for their book. They will read through it to make sure they said exactly what they wanted to say. This is the revision step of writing. They are going to partner up and become an "editor." I am going to give them a rubric to use to make sure they use correct spelling and grammar. Finally, they are going to publish their book using the blank books and markers.
Donating to my class, will instill in my students that they do have a voice and it can be heard.
Writing and reading are so important! Your donation will open up my students' "minds" and bring their unique stories into something more than just a story, but a "published" book. Building confidence in writing promotes a confidence in reading. Your donation will help my students to take this first step to becoming writers and readers.
