Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recently, our school became a STEAM magnet school and we could not be more excited! Teachers work together in partnerships and teams to help students become life long learners. Our middle school students are mostly bused in from outside our neighborhood, and our population of almost six hundred students continues to grow!
Our Special Education scholars represent approximately one-quarter of our school population.
We are a Title One school based on our families' financial levels, and every student is entitled to free lunch. I work very hard designing lessons that have real-world applications, community based lessons and academic excellence.
My Project
What is more interesting for a student to write about than something they have done themselves? I teach in a classroom for students with intellectual disabilities and we function on the district Alternate Curriculum. As such, I supplement the materials and make every lesson as fun as possible to inspire the students. I have been working with families to document their scholars' activities and send in digital copies so we can work with the students to write books about themselves! Unfortunately, we have no good way to "publish" or print their final draft. My special needs classroom is in need of a laser color printer and additional toner!
As a part of our writing assignments, we have begun to work with families to collect pictures of the students doing important and interesting things.
Using these pictures to have the students write and publish their own books! Unfortunately, our current printer is not up to the task of printing beautiful color pages to make these books into the amazing reading and writing materials I know they can be!
