My Students
The classes for heritage Spanish speakers here at Santiago High School not only help our students learn Spanish, but help the deepen their understanding an connection to their heritage thus improving their feeling of self worth an connection to the culture of our school.
Both the Spanish Heritage and French classes help our students create a greater connection to the world wide community.
Literacy in the taget language is essential. Reading authentic texts is is vital for the upper level classes and will help our students develop the communication skills that will benefit them as they enter into the world job market.
My Project
Reading has been proven by Stephen Krashen's research to be the greatest contributing factor to improving language output via writing. Providing interesting texts to read and presenting those texts in a comprehensible way is essential in the modern world language classroom.
By reading and discussing the authentic texts of "Ourika" and "Cajas de cartón" in class, the students will greatly increase their skills in French and Spanish.
Additionally, it will give them valuable insight into the cultural differences of each. The unique perspective provided by these books will greatly increase the students comprehension of other people and cultures in the world.
