My Students

What do you read most? For most adults the answer to that question is non-fiction, both for work and pleasure. Magazines and newspapers are a major part of a successful daily diet of reading for most adults. I want to hook my students with this important part of life long reading.

My students are bright and excited to learn 8th graders at a small, inner-city school.

They are a tight knit group as a number of them have been together since kindergarten. Many come from around the world (Eastern Europe and Latin America). While our school is 92% low income, this does not stop my students from dreaming their own big dreams! Top high schools and great colleges are what they are reaching for.

My Project

These magazine subscriptions The New York Times Upfront, Choices, Science World, Junior Scholastic, and Time For Kids will bring the world into my classroom. While books about science and social issues quickly become dated, these magazines will provide current reading materials. From the environment and pandemics to national politics and social problems, these magazines will cover a wide range of topics and issues. These magazines will allow my students to learn about the world around them and connect it to themselves. They will become better, more informed citizens and consumers while learning about the government and the economy. I will be able to use these texts to teach them strategies to evaluate evidence and bias in non-fiction texts, a key skill for success in school and in life (as well as being essential in the new Common Core Standards). In addition, my students have a range of reading abilities and these magazines will help meet our need for texts at a variety of levels.

Through the use of these magazines in my classroom, my students, as well as the sixth and seventh graders, will become better, more informed citizens and consumers.

Access to these reading materials will hook them on the balanced reading diet that they need to thrive as lifelong readers.
