Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently work for a K-5 public elementary school located in the South Bronx. We are a turnaround school who took over a school that phased out. 97% of our students receive free or reduced-priced lunch and 30% of our students live in temporary housing. Since our opening in 2013, we have seen tremendous growth in our students both socially and academically. We want to continue to strengthen our students love of learning math by providing them with experiences they will need and use for a lifetime!
We are also in process of becoming the first International Baccalaureate elementary school in NYC!
As we strive to provide our students with the highest quality education, our goal is to encourage our students to be independent, drive their own learning, and be able to engage with people in an increasingly globalized, rapidly changing world. Through the International Baccalaureate framework, we are currently pushing our instruction to new heights and look forward to the years to come.
My Project
As a school that is in process of becoming the first International Baccalaureate elementary school in NYC, we are committed to providing our students with high quality education that integrates the arts and sciences. One way we do that is through a math book of the month each month. Quality books are chosen and vertically aligned tasks are created for students in grades K-5 that give them opportunities to explore the lessons they are learning in various ways. All tasks are directly aligned to the NYS math Common Core Learning Standards. We started book of the month a few years ago and our students truly enjoy the authentic literature as well as engaging in a culminating task that goes with the book!
By donating to this project, you are helping us to continue to provide authentic literature to enrich young children's math experiences.
Students will be able to explore these books and make everyday applications to how math is used all around us, in particular with our math book of the month tasks. Students walk away from engaging with these books with real-world lessons they can take with them for a lifetime!
