Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are 60 awesome students in my class! Whoo! That's a lot of students. 5th grade Dual Language means double the kids, double the needs, double the excitement and double the joy. Every week, two groups of students switch between my classroom and my co-teacher's classroom; learning in English one day and in Spanish the next.
Every time I get new books to put into the classroom library, the students get so excited.
Still, as an educator, it's not easy providing a classroom library that is rich in genres and texts. The students in my class not only need to be fluent in English but also in Spanish. Trying to to provide the resources and materials to keep them engaged is not easy when you have to find it in 2 languages. Being able to provide them with authentic Spanish texts would be a life-saver for my students.
My Project
I teach in a Dual Language setting. Therefore, I have 2 groups of students who switch between classrooms to learn one day in English and the next day in Spanish. Having 60 students rotating every day between my classroom and my co-teacher's also means that we need to have materials not only in English but also in Spanish. Finding authentic literature in Spanish is either difficult to find or too costly. My co-teacher and I go to every book sale looking to diversify our classroom library with not only good translated texts but also authentic literature in Spanish. Often we find that some translated texts are not good translations so we are trying to build a library with true Spanish literature.
